Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What type of leagues do you run?
A: We specialize in running men's slow-pitch softball leagues. We do not run a coed league or a women's league.

Q: What levels of play does your league have?
A: Since we have plenty of teams in our league, we are able to run leagues at various competitive levels. Therefore, we are in a good position to find a good fit for your team's level of play. For example we offer the following:
  • Competitive
  • Intermediate
  • Beginner/recreational
Q: What days and times are your games?
Since we have many fields, we are able to offer various day/time slots for you to choose from. For example, we offer the following:
  • Sunday morning - 9 AM or 11:30 AM
  • Sunday evening - 6 PM or 8:15 PM
  • Weeknights - 7:00 PM, 8:15 PM & 9 PM

Of course, it's best to register early, so that you get the day/time slot you prefer.

Q: What fields does your league utilize?
A: Most of our games are played on quality Nassau County and Town of Hempstead fields. Click here for more information.

Q: Why are your league fees less than other leagues?
A: Our entire league administration is comprised of current and former softball players who help run the league for the love of the game. They are all volunteers. No one is paid a salary!

Q: Does your league fee include insurance?
A: We get this question a lot. People think because the league fee is low we must be cutting corners somewhere. Let me assure, we're not foolish enough to do it with insurance coverage. So, this is important to note. Our league fees include liability insurance policies. Some leagues may try to cut corners here, but we believe it's important "just in case".

Q: Does the league fee include softballs?
A: Yes, you will get enough softballs to cover your full season. If you advance to the playoffs, the league will provide additional softballs.

Q: Do you make up rainouts?
A: Yes, we generally make-up all games. We intend to give you the maximum value for your fee.

Q: What is your playoff format?
A: We have a best 2 out of 3 series format. We also reward the team with the better regular season record by making them the home team in games 1 & 3.
We also believe this is the best measure to determine if a team should advance to the next round, or be declared a champion. Some leagues don't do this!

Q: How much do the umpires cost?
A: Your team will pay $25 to the umpire for each game ($50/doubleheader).

Q: How many players can I put on my roster?
A: The roster should include no more than 20 players. We do realize, however, that sometimes players don't work out for whatever reason, so we do allow replacements to be made up to around half way through the season.

Q: What does my team get if they win the league championship?
A: Each player on the team will receive a championship shirt.

Q: My team is comprised of ballplayers who play good defense and don't like losing to big out-of-shape guys who just hit. Any suggestions?
A: Yes, we have a league that plays with a "Clincher softball" which makes it a challenge to hit and places an emphasis on defense. Don't misunderstand us, it's not like you will be playing 1-0 games. But it makes for an interesting game when everyone is not hitting a homerun!

Q: How do I register my team?
A: You can register in two ways. (1) You can register and pay the deposit online or (2) you can arrange to meet with us and we will be happy to further discuss the league with you.

Q: How should checks be written?
A: Checks should be made payable as follows:
Sunday Morning:  "Valley Stream Softball League"
Sunday Evening and Weeknight League: "Knights of Columbus Softball League"

Q: I have other questions to ask, May I contact you?
A: Yes, please feel free to call (516) 256-7799 (office) or (516) 707-4061 (cell). Ask for Tony. If he's not available, he will generally return your call within 24 hours.
